This bookclub is kinda dead now...I'm just going to start writing reviews again on my original site.

Another reason is everyone is busy, moved cities, trying to make sense of our lives.....barely enough time to write emails/blog let alone....contribute to this. =)

I'm happy to discuss the books I'm reading, or if anyone has recommendations I'm also happy to hear it and go buy the book.

Bye Bye Bookclub!!

Let me know....Naked by David Sedaris

I know this bookclub has been stagnant for a while, due to festivities, holidays, no net access etc etc. I'll be starting it up again for those keen on it.

Just a quick note, can you respond to this post if you found and have read this book.  I'm afraid, I can't locate this book as it's not published in the UK until June and due to the crazy London postal service..I am not keen to buy it online.

If anyone did buy and read this book, then I will just have to be a observer for this book.

If no one has bought it, then maybeeee Mabel can pick ANOTHER book which I hope I can find and participate in the discussion....

Okay

NEW BOOK OF THE CLUB

Mabel recommends......

" I recommend "Naked" by David Sedaris.

It's a very funny book about a personal life. I bought the book but have not read it yet. I think it would be a very light hearted and easy read. It has received around 4.5 stars out of 5 stars on Amazon.com.

It talks about the quirks of his life growing up, his very dysfunctional but humorous family, and more. It came out in 1998 so it's not a new book but some of the best literay books aren't recent ones. Enjoy!

I'll be reading with the rest of the club!

Oh, btw, it's softcover so it's not hard to lug around. Carry it on the train or take it to a coffee shop! Be prepared to laugh or find it amusing. "

I had a quick read of the blurb on Amazon, and I'm keen to get this book.  Again, no pressure to read this if you're busy or can't find the book.  For those who are interested in joining this one, can you comment to let me know who we're waiting for etc..

Chuck Palahniuk: Invisible Monsters

A fashion model with everything is disfigured in a road "accident" and goes from being the beautiful centre of attention to being a monster, so hideous that no one will acknowledge she exists. She then has to learn that reinventing herself means erasing her past and making up something better.

Note of Apology

I posed this bookclub and the first book a month ago and unfortunately I haven't had time nor the resources [internet] to start creating this site.  Hopefully some of you managed to find the book and have finished. If not, stay tuned for the next book selection.

Book Club Discussion

As I find books or things which I find interesting, through word-of-mouth, reviews, websites I tend to save it into a document as a reminder to find the book or the interested item.

At that time, I have not heard of Chuck Palahniuk or knew that he was the author of Fight Club.

All I had was a few choice quotes:

    * "the only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open"

    * "Most women know this feeling of being more and more invisible everyday"

    * "he wore a Speedo, and any smart woman should know that means bisexual at least"

    * "Panicking by yourself is the same as laughing alone in an empty room. You feel really silly."

    * "when we don't know who to hate, we hate ourselves"

    * "game shows are designed to make us feel better about the random, useless facts that are all we have left of our education"

    * "when did the future switch from being a promise to being a threat?"

    * "the one you love and the one who loves you are never the same person"

    * "the most boring thing in the world is nudity. The second most boring thing is honesty"

Then WHEN I found out at the bookstore that the book was written in a SNAP manner where the style reminded me of the Fight Club movie [coincidence coincidence that I love that movie too].

I was like... 'This is the book'.

I wanted a book to be different, to be fresh, to give me things to think of and discuss, and I feel before reading and more so after reading, that this book is the epitome of all that.

Now having given my reason for chosing that book, what did I think?

I. LOVED. IT.

Admittedly while reading the first few chapters, especially the scene where she [Shannon, our female protagonist-model] explained felching to her parents, which is a term I have never heard of. I was extremely grossed out and nervously thought, 'oh no, what have I chosen....'

Also, as the ending was in the first few chapters, I thought the book was more about the journey than the ending. WRONG.

I remember getting to the chapter where Evie's mum was showing them around the mansion and said how Evie used to be EVAN!! OMG, I REELED in shock horror!! I was like WHAT THE!

Then flashed to the wedding, where Brandy and Shannon revealed what they had done to themselves and I was just sitting on my bed going NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY and had to put the book down for a few minutes before continuing to read the ending.

The ending sat quite well with me, not the self-mutilation but the fact that sometimes when you're so bored you would do anything to just walk a different side of life, to escape a label bestowed on you since birth, to be able to have the freedom to do whatever you like.

Society is all about image.

If you don't fit the mould, you retreat into a shell of insecurities.

Insecurities which makes you not willing to risk things,
yet to gain TRUE happiness we are told to risk EVERYTHING,
as fear inhibits us from being the person we are meant to be.

Some would call this a Catch-22 situation

My hope, is that we are all meant to be happy.

I have more thoughts on the book but let's start with you guys telling me your thoughts and let's begin discussing.

Starting question, what was your opinion of the book?

Did you like it?

Random Thoughts Encouraged!
